CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Yagen Toushirou
AGE: Approx. 820 years old
CANON: Touken Ranbu

CANON HISTORY:
Links! I'm going to streamline this a bit with some pastebins too, as excerpts from various sources. They contain proper credit for the blogs/wiki page that they come from, I just prefer this to keep things clean without the authors' custom layouts straining eyeballs.

Yagen has somewhat significant appearances in Touken Ranbu's two anime series, Hanamaru and Katsugeki. Hanamaru is more focused on the day-to-day lives and relationships of the sword warriors amongst eachother, Katsugeki has more of an historical and action-based narrative where Yagen is a member of second squad assigned to stop the Retrograde Army.

Because the two series are variants of the original source canon's standard setting, if only one anime series can be drawn from for "canon" regains alongside what occurs in-game (source canon), I prefer Katsugeki as canon regains, and Hanamaru's events can be treated as "headcanon memory regains" that could plausibly happen in the source canon, with some tweaking.

Link to the Katsugeki Anime's Page on the wiki. Yagen is a supporting character and a part of the squad that Katsugeki focuses on. He has supporting roles in nearly all current episodes (8 as of this app), with the exception of Episode 7.

CANON PERSONALITY:
Yagen is a Sengoku-era samurai sword to the core, even when he is only the spirit of a tantou. Most tantou of the Awataguchi school, while well-made and are perfectly usable as weapons in their own right, they are more well-known as good luck-charms carried by lords. He stands out from his fellow tantou brothers because he has actually seen battle during the turbulent warring states period, as he was passed down to active generals who would carry him as a last-resort weapon. This is because he was known as "the blade who would cut anything but his master (referring to seppuku)" thanks to a legend giving him his name. He also caught the fancy of one of the famous, or infamous warlords of the time, Nobunaga Oda, who carried him everywhere and supposedly to to his final moments where they burned at Honnouji.

He has a calm disposition that thinks independently. He sees things as they are, and prefers to make his own judgments than simply take those that others already made. For example, he has an opinion of his former master Oda that is much different from those of other swords that were in his possession and became tsukumogami, ranging from outward dislike to grief stricken devotion toward the man. Yagen quietly takes the middle road, acknowledging his faults as a human, but respecting his ambition and ideals. In the Hanamaru anime, he confesses that he found comfort in how human and straightforward Nobunaga really was, knowing the man's real self by being kept close. His Kiwame letters say something similar, even calling him normal (which he admits later to be something he knows is strange to hear). In the Katsugeki anime, he tells Izuminokami Kanesada that he thought of his masters were great men to sympathize with Izuminokami's nostalgic feelings towards his own master, which would include the infamous conqueror as well.

Yagen's responsible and dependable; it's both natural to him and something that he does keeps up as an older brother figure to his brothers. For the Oda swords, he's the least outspoken and more level-headed, making him a person that any of the the others can get along with to some extent, despite their differing opinions. He also accepts how they feel for someone he himself loved, and does not force opinion onto them. As for his brothers, they look up to him due to his maturity and intelligence. When their eldest brother Ichigo Hitofuri is absent in Hanamaru and the Toushirou brothers long to see him, Yagen takes it upon himself to watch over them and try to summon Ichigo. As for his role in Katsugeki, he handles the tasks assigned to him efficiently, and manages very well in combat. He was often tasked with solo work, because he was more experienced in recon and stealth, though in emergencies he could handle fighting back to defend himself and continue his tasks. He is also considered a symbol of loyalty with his legend to back him up that he'd never harm his master, even for suicide, and he asks the Saniwa to rely on him in game.

Swords can sometimes take after traits of their master, and Yagen would seem to have taken Oda's practical way of thinking. He has more serious hobbies than one would expect from someone of his young appearance. In particular he's more interested in reading than playing around like his brothers, and he enjoys medicinal research in his free time. As for a more general mindset, he's serious and doesn't dwell on the past and cares more about the present and future. This is also why he is not troubled by having a past tied to Nobunaga, because regardless of his feelings, the man is deceased and he now serves a new master. In Katsugeki, he even gently reminds Izuminokami of their current compared to past nostalgia, and while it's fine to reminisce over their past owners (like what he doing, thinking of Hijikata), they shouldn't forget the mission and their current loyalties.

It should be noted that despite that, it does lead to weakness he has in return for how hard he tries to maintain a mature image. He notes that unlike most swords or even his brothers, he lacks a sort of elegance to his thoughts and mannerisms. He says things without reservation and in a direct, even rude sort of tone by Japan's standards for language. While he does not let a lack of refinement hinder him, in a way it isolates him from his brothers. He remains looking like a child because of the kind of sword his true form is, yet he often is not at all childish because so much of his "innocence" was lost to being a sword that has seen war firsthand. His brothers are more sheltered in nature because they were considered treasures and good luck charms. Sometimes Yagen would tease them and their naivete, but he does not let his pragmatism rub off on them by knowing his true feelings. With the Oda swords, he respects the others' opinions by understating his own. In Katsugeki he tells his brother Honebami that he dislikes personal conflicts like arguments and thus controls what he talks about, even if it meas he cannot express his feelings. This however leaves him with difficulties in connecting with others.

This leads to another flaw where Yagen keeps his feelings to himself. In the second squad of Katsugeki, it's notable that he gave the coldest introduction. One of the swords in the group, Mutsunokami, encourages that the members get to know eachother through interests and hobbies, rather than Izuminokami's original preference in knowing their name and past masters. Despite their discussion, Yagen only gives his name and that he's a tantou when prompted. He maintains a professional sort of attitude regarding the main mission that squad two was assigned. After its completion, he hides away in his room from the other members because while the mission was considered a success, the innocent casualties left the others in turmoil, with one member severely wounded and comatose. However, when asked by his brother Honebami about how he felt being on a team, he says despite their arguments, it wasn't bad to work with others on a mission. It's implied that he is more willing to show a more genuine and vulnerable side to his older siblings. This is present in that moment during Katsugeki, and in an episode of Hanamaru. In that episode he struggles to keep the morale of his brothers up while waiting for their brother Ichigo to arrive, then finally breaks down when Ichigo is summoned to the citadel and thanks Yagen personally.

It should also be noted that, while not he is not as sadistic or bloodthirsty as other swords can be in battle, he can be frighteningly brutal when he fights. This goes along with how he's the favorite sword of a notorious warlord, as well as a pragmatic fighter when it comes down to it. He's not afraid to taunt the enemy, and doesn't hesitate even when he's outnumbered. Humorously this translates to a bit of a teasing side off the battlefield, and something of a mad scientist streak. At the beach, he chases his brother Midare with a starfish that he wants to research for anesthesia, and he sometimes makes questionable medicine that he tests out on the other swords. This is from Hanamaru, so it's meant to be a gag.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
As a tsukumogami, Yagen is sturdier than an average human, and knows combat through training and his past as a sword. As the blade he wields in battle is his real self, there's a connection between his corporeal body. His "human" form reflects the condition of his vessel, such as damage on the blade becoming injuries on him. If it breaks, he will die. Yagen has been shown in both Hanamaru and Katsugeki to be very experienced in fighting, taking on teams of enemies solo without too much difficulty. He specializes in fast, deadly strikes to make up for a lack of range, and he's even able to fight opponents mid-air with some jumps and acrobatic feats. Interestingly, he knows first aid and field medicine, which are skills demonstrated in Katsugeki and Hanamaru respectively.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Yanagi Taira
AU AGE: 14 years old
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:
-Fully human with all of its pros and cons
-His voice is at a normal range for a young teenage boy
-His eyes are dark brown instead of purple

AU HISTORY:
-Yanagi is a child who was raised in a wealthy, traditional family who remarried. They're also not related to him by blood except for some of the children, where they share a father.
-He's actually born to a businessman and his new wife. However, she was a sickly woman and passed away when Yanagi was a baby. The father, who lost custody of his children from his original marriage and admittedly was unfit to raise a child on his own, would have put Yanagi up for adoption.
-His father's ex-wife offered to take the child, both to boost her image as a "charitable woman" who was willing to take in her former husband's son, and also to spite him. However, by some miracle she grew to love the child as her own, even more than the sons and daughters she had with the man.
-Despite the poor health he inherited from his mother, Yanagi is intelligent and does well in school. However he had few friends, focusing on his studies instead and feeling isolated because of his upbringing.
-At one point he realized that even if he knew his stepmother's love was genuine, she controlled a lot of his life for the sake of his potential. That combined with the turmoil of his stepfather's scandals caused him to embrace a thrill-seeking side that longed for independence.
-He moved to Recolle as part of a foreign exchange student program. His parents allowed it because he earned the spot through academic achievement; they think of it as a teenager phase.
-He's staying with a host family, who he is very polite with, but doesn't let them on to his issues.

-Relations: With permission by both players (from workshop/tdm planning), he's Akinobu Taira's half-brother (dropped but played by Kiva), and Kouran's step-brother (reserved this round and played by Mori). Due to circumstances, this part may be disregarded, it's more for confirmation when other characters in-game ask.

AU PERSONALITY:
Alright, some explanation on tantou-type spirits and how not being one would affect Yanagi in an AU setting. He's actually an odd duck, even by Touken Ranbu's standards for how their identities as swords then reflect their personalities as tsukumogami. Yagen may look like a younger teenager because he's a tantou, but he has the voice, mannerisms, and emotional maturity of someone much older, even an adult. He's been in battle and has a certain reputation to him that make him experienced, but distant. Yanagi in this AU setting is mature in personality to some extent, but without the things his original self's past, the comrades or family that he had to influence his mannerisms, or the supernatural lifespan to reflect on humanity, he's definitely less seasoned or even weathered by living. He also is less happier and content with his surroundings like Yagen would be, and thus he's riskier and more outgoing in hopes that can improve it on some level that way.

-Purpose: Tantou know what they're around for right off the bat, and that's to serve the Saniwa and fight for a good cause. One could say they were born with it, as swords are made to serve their owners and protect them. Lots of the tantous embody this, and some of them even act dutifully like servants. Canon Yagen is dutiful all the way through, and most of what he does is for the sake of the Saniwa, duty, or the citadel. Yanagi feels like he has a purpose, but it was one put upon him by his family, thus having a more cynical view of it. That said he has a personal sense of duty that's stronger than Yagen, which makes him an oddly serious kid to where he thinks it counts. He's also more spontaneous from that.

-Awareness: Tantou actually tend to be the oldest swords ingame. While they're immature in personality, they adapt extremely well to situations for looking so young. In Hanamaru, they act fast upon realizing something was going wrong, like Yamatonokami disappearing from existence. They also are rather mellow in terms of complexes. Something to note is that they're very rational and in most cases will not break the taboo of altering history without accepting consequences (younger swords are known struggle with facing the past). Yanagi has a sense of awareness, but he makes use of it different from how his original self as Yagen, who used it out of compassion for his master, comrades, and brother. He also used it to be good at fulfilling his duty. Yanagi uses his sense of awareness on a smaller scale, and it comes from wanting to connect with others and understand his environment. He's thoughtful at points, but also a troublemaker who seeks knowledge and fulfilling his curiosity.

-Progression: Frankly, tsukumogami are stubborn. They can be very attached to their complexes and attachments because it's how they stay connected to their identities and pasts as swords. Unless something drastic happens with consequences, they are slow at growing emotionally. Tantou are an interesting case about this. Not even they are immune to having silly complexes that they use to define them, but as the weakest type of sword, they'd be willing to do something drastic to remain useful and grow, hence Kiwame training. They actually develop considerably from it, because it's often a personal journey teaches them an important. For Yagen, his Kiwame Journey is acceptance of the good he saw in Nobunaga, and him feeling comfortable to tell his master his honest feelings, controversial they may be. Yanagi meanwhile is a teenager trying to understand what he wants when he's lived without much freedom. He's adaptable still, but more when it involves outside crisis than internal problems and conflicts.

-Reputation: Swords really care about their legends, and for the sake of individuality it shapes their personality a good deal. Yagen has a legend that he could cut through stone, but not his own master out of devotion. He also found his own way to deal with being the sword of an "evil man". Thanks to those stories, Yagen is considered the embodiment of loyalty, where it could even defy normal conventions. Meanwhile Yanagi is unhappy with his identity and the connections he has with his family. But, while his loyalty is less serious in nature, it can surprisingly strong when called for, because of how rarely he feels that it's warranted.
